Digital Health startup often face the challenges in understanding their financial valuation. I recently attended a workshop led by leading corporate finance experts from William Buck. The session was super educational and provided invaluable insights into the financial principles. It is crucial for evaluating our own valuation and ensuring sustainable growth.
A big thank you to ANDHealth and the State Government of Victoria for making this event possible!
An overview I made to summarise the Financial modelling concepts introduced in the workshop.
In the workshop, the speakers introduced a range of useful financial modelling concepts. I further summarised them into the three pillars.
1. Financial Foundations
Understanding the core components of financial statements is essential. We delved into profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow management, which are critical for forecasting and strategic decision-making. A solid financial foundation empowers us to make informed choices as we navigate the complexities of the digital health landscape.
2. Operational Insights
We explored the key revenue drivers and cost structures that impact our bottom line. By analysing customer acquisition strategies and operational expenses, we can better manage our cash flow and optimise profitability. This insight is vital for startups like ours, helping us align our operational strategies with financial performance.
3. Strategic Valuation
The workshop emphasised the importance of robust valuation techniques. We learned about scenario analysis and sensitivity analysis, tools that enable us to assess the impact of different variables on our financial outcomes. Understanding our valuation not only attracts investors but also communicates our financial health effectively to stakeholders.
The given case study on a Hypothetical SaaS startup.
In the second session, we were given a practical case study to work on. I noticed some assumptions are only applicable in healthcare. For example, the sales cycle is generally slower and hence the forecasting cycle should be one to two quarter longer. Applying those fundamentals into the given spreadsheet, it is useful to draw the insights the VC / investors want to know about.
Overall, the workshop was great! It equips me with the tools and knowledge to enhance our financial modeling capabilities in the digital health space. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside industry peers and gain insights that will help drive our startup's success!
