I recently had the opportunity to participate in a transformative digital health hackathon organised by Mahima Kalla from The Validitron - University of Melbourne and Victoria Betton betton from UK NHS. They educated us on creating user-centered and equitable solutions for health at work.

Problem and Solution

Our solution framing and prototype.

Our team tackled a significant challenge raised by one of the largest health insurers regarding their cumbersome paper-based billing claim workflow. This workflow incurred significant admin burden for clinicians and staff, lots of whom have faced burnout and mental health issues. We proposed an innovative solution using an AI and Automation to streamline and automate the process.

Three Takeaways from this hackathon:

1. The Power of User-Centered Design

One of the core lessons reinforced throughout the hackathon was the importance of user-centered design. Engaging with end-users to understand their pain points allows us to create solutions that truly meet their needs. Shown in the above picture, I summarsed an overview taught by Dr.Betton on the concepts in UXD. By focusing on user feedback, we can design more effective and accessible digital health tools. This approach not only improves usability but also enhances overall user satisfaction and trust in the system.

2. Equity in Digital Health Solutions

Addressing equity in health technology is critical. Shown above, this is the toolbox I summarised for Equity in Digital Health introduced by Dr.Kalla. We learned that diverse populations must be represented in the design process to ensure that digital solutions are inclusive and accessible. Our discussions emphasised the necessity of considering how different users interact with technology and ensuring that our solutions do not inadvertently exacerbate existing health disparities. For example, if the solution is not user-centered, there might be a bias in data collection process, hence not being functional. This commitment to equity will guide our team as we refine our proposal on AI and automated workflow solution.

3. Collaboration and Networking

The hackathon fostered a collaborative environment where I connected with peers and experts in the field. Sharing insights and brainstorming with fellow participants enriched my perspective and sparked innovative ideas. A special shoutout to Professor Phil Dolan and my peer I connected, Butho MoyoDavid HollySajjad KamalVu Trung Nguyen, and Linh Nguyen for their invaluable contributions during workshop discussions. Building these connections is essential for facilitating future collaborations and support as we work to implement our proposed solutions.

Moving Forward

I am excited about the potential of our AI and automated workflow to revolutionise the healthcare. The skills and insights gained from this hackathon will undoubtedly shape my approach to digital health challenges moving forward. Let’s continue to push the boundaries of innovation in mental health and healthcare technology!
PS: Pure coincidence to join this event prior to my employment with Heidi Health - nonetheless, I have been fortunate to join the venture at Heidi with its mission to improve the patient care by saving time on making clinical documentation. I believe this will transform the future healthcare with the advent of Telehealth services. What is your thought?
